How It Works
Create a Group
An org admin or system admin creates a group — a class, a team, a club, or any collection of people the organization needs to organize.
Add Members
Students, instructors, and parents are added to the group. An assigned instructor can then manage that group's membership directly from the Admin portal.
Access Follows Role, Not Setup
No per-group permission configuration is needed — an instructor automatically sees only their assigned groups, and a parent or student automatically sees only their own.
Everything Built on Groups Inherits It
Since classrooms are groups underneath, the same membership and access rules apply the moment a class is created — no separate setup for classroom-specific permissions.

Common Questions
What's the difference between a Group and a Classroom?
None, structurally — a Classroom is a Group of type Class. Groups are the general-purpose primitive; classrooms are simply groups configured for academic use. See our Classrooms page for classroom-specific detail.
Can I use groups for things other than school classes?
Yes. Groups are the same structure whether you're organizing a homeroom class, a sports team, or a community club — that flexibility is the point, not a limitation.
Who can manage a group's membership?
Org admins and system admins can manage every group in the organization. Instructors can manage membership only for the groups they're assigned to.
Can an instructor add or remove group members from the mobile app?
Not currently. On mobile, adding or removing members from a group is limited to org admins and system admins — instructors can view their groups and rosters on the app, but need the web Admin portal to add or remove members.
Can we bulk-import groups from a spreadsheet?
Not yet. There's no CSV bulk import for groups anywhere in the platform today — groups are created individually through the API or the Admin portal.
What do parents and students see in Groups?
Only what's theirs. A parent sees their own child's groups; a student sees only the groups they belong to. Neither can browse the organization's full group list.
